Think of how you could use these tools to enhance literacy classes:
WallWisher-Use an online sticky note bulletin board. Post notes and media in response to a question. This would be great to put forward ideas for a story.
Moshi Monsters- Ideal for Early Childhood students to introduce them to virtual worlds. They will learn lots of literacy along the way, communicating with other monsters and completing literacy and numeracy games to earn rocks.
Pageflakes-Get all of your favourite RSS feeds coming to the one page. Access Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and any other websites that you regularly visit. Encourage students to use Pageflakes and include their favourite news and magazine sites on it. This will increase reading time and may lead to additional research. bookr:pimpampum- A great fun tool for any age group. Search for a particular theme in Flickr and create a story from photos and text. This would also be good for younger students with the teacher as scribe.
Mixbook-There is a cost associated with this and overseas postage but you can make really good use of it without ordering a book.
Wordle – Generate word clouds from any written text. View the latest word clouds created by others. Put student spelling lists in word clouds. Put poems into word clouds and rewrite them. Guess the poem or song from the word cloud.
Glogster
Create posters using a combination of text and media. Search posters created by others.
Bookrix- For all those interested in self publishing and in receiving feedback about their writing. This is an excellent site for extending highly-able student writers.
VoiceThread
Upload images, add audio, text or video comments for it. This is great for poetry. Other people who view the VoiceThread may also add comments. (there is a setting to moderate comments).
